Showground 'at its limit' as sales soar

Organisers of the Royal Highland Show say the event has now reached capacity on its current site as they revealed ticket sales are running around ten per cent ahead of last year's record-breaking event.

Advance ticket sales for the show at Ingliston, which starts tomorrow, have hit 200,000, more than ever before.

Visitor numbers at the four-day event have soared from 148,283 in 2007 to 187,644 last year.

Stephen Hutt, chief executive of the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, confirmed work would begin within months on the first phase of a 30 million revamp of the site.

He said: "We could actually expand on to another part of our site at the moment, but we are conscious of the fact that last year, when we had our biggest ever crowds, we were reaching capacity in the car parks."
