Shop owner loses appeal to open cafe in former butcher

A BID to open a new fast food outlet in the city centre has lost its final appeal.

The owner of a shop unit in Nicolson Street wanted to create a cafe, but was refused planning permission by the council earlier this year.

He took his fight to the Scottish Government, but it too has now rejected his bid to transform the former butcher’s shop at 77 Nicolson Street.

Both authorities cited an over-provision of takeaways and cafes in the street and, while acknowledging it would have some merit, said they would prefer to retain more shops.

Holyrood planning reporter Gerry Farrington said: “A cafe in this particular location is likely to complement the character of the centre. On the other hand, it is vital that shopping remains an important function of town centres.

“Therefore, I conclude that the appeal should fail and that planning permission should be refused.”
