Rangers ‘will not pay Charles Green legal fees’

RANGERS chairman Dave King has released a statement insisting that the Ibrox club ‘will strongly resist’ any attempts by former owner Charles Green to force them into paying his legal fees.

Green, one of a number of figures investigated as part of a probe into the takeover of Rangers in 2012, has been charged with fraud, conspiracy and an offence under Section 190 of the Companies Act (2006).

Initial reports suggested that Rangers had denied receiving any contact from Green’s legal team.

But a statement released by chairman Dave King appears to confirm that the 62-year-old did contact the club in a bid to get his legal fees paid by Rangers.

King said: “Charles Green approached the Club prior to his arrest and demanded that we pay his legal costs in respect of his co-operation with Police Scotland in its criminal investigation into his time as an officer of the Club.

I advised him that we would not do so.

“He was subsequently arrested and has now approached the Court to compel the Club to pay the legal costs of his defence to the criminal charges.

“This application will be strongly resisted.”
