Shirley McKie fingerprint inquiry comes to a close

A LONG-RUNNING public inquiry into the Shirley McKie fingerprint controversy drew to a close yesterday.

More than 60 witnesses gave evidence during the inquiry into the case of the former policewoman from Ayrshire who was accused of leaving her fingerprint at the home of a murder victim in 1997.

Miss McKie, from Troon, subsequently challenged the findings of the fingerprint experts and in 2006 was given 750,000 in an out-of-court settlement from the then Scottish Executive.

Sitting in Glasgow, inquiry chair Sir Anthony Campbell listened to evidence from 64 witnesses during 250 hours of hearings spanning 57 days.

The public inquiry began in June to address questions over the steps taken to identify and verify the fingerprint, known as "Y7".
