Sheriffs boycott Kirking service
SHERIFFS in Edinburgh who lost their battle to reshift the pecking order of a traditional procession refused to turn up for the ceremony yesterday.
Each year, judges, sheriffs, and advocates make their way through Edinburgh from the Supreme Court to St Giles Cathedral for the annual 'Kirking of the Court', a service where they are blessed for the new legal session.
Traditionally, advocates follow judges in the procession, but this year between ten and 12 sheriffs who had hoped to be pushed up the rank boycotted the event after they were refused permission to follow the judges.
