Shelter's shops gear up for annual sale of bargain collectables
IT'S probably not at the top of most people's lists when it comes to places to go shopping in the January sales.
But hundreds of shoppers are set to snap up a bargain at the annual Shelter sale in Stockbridge on January 3.
A vintage gramophone player, an illustrated book on Japanese poetry, a pair of Lambeth Doulton vases and the first pressing of Elvis Presley's debut album - priced at 100 - are among the items up for grabs at this year's charity shop sale.
Customers will also be able to buy items from the neighbouring Shelter bookshop.
Shelter Scotland's Forrest Road shop will follow suit with its own sale on January 7, where a vintage Lanvin cape and a stunning beaded 1920s dress will be among the highlights. Last year, shoppers queued for more than two hours before the sales, hoping to get their hands on desirable designer goods and quirky collectors' items. More than 4000 was raised on the first day of the sale alone.
Area manager for Shelter Scotland's shops, Ron Hill, said: "Our annual January sales are always extremely popular, with customers queuing well in advance to snap up some of the great items we have on sale.
"Due to the high quality of some of the special goods people have so generously donated, we are hoping this year will be an even bigger success.
"We urge shoppers to get down to our sale and grab a unique bargain while helping a good cause at the same time.
"All funds raised will help support Shelter Scotland's work to help people struggling with housing issues or facing homelessness."
A range of items will be on sale at the Stockbridge shop including collectable records by Elvis and The Beatles, and the soundtrack albums to the first four James Bond movies.
A print by late artist Benjamin Chee Chee can be purchased for 80, while at the bookshop next door Christie's Ballad Airs - a two-volume 19th Century collection that belonged to folklorist William Walker of Aberdeen - will be up for grabs for 100.
Theory and Practice of the Confectioner by JM Erich Weber, published in Dresden in 1929, will also be on sale at the bookshop, for 50.
Both the Stockbridge and Forrest Road sales will get under way at 10am.
Shoppers will also be able to get their hands on an abundance of kitsch collectables at the Stockbridge shop including famous names such as Hummel, Whitefriars and Belleek.
A spokesman for Shelter Scotland said: "Hundreds of people are expected to attend the opening of our January sales, which have grown in popularity over the last few years. The sales are eagerly anticipated both by regular Shelter Scotland supporters and the general public."
