Sheep alert for mums-to-be

PREGNANT woman across the Lothians have been warned to avoid contact with sheep during the lambing season.

In an alert issued by Health Protection Scotland, expecting mothers have been told that infections such as chlamydiosis that can be passed on during lambing season can heighten the chances of miscarriage.

Scottish chief medical officer Dr Harry Burns has backed the warning, advising that pregnant women do not help lamb or milk ewes, avoid contact with new-born or aborted lambs, and avoid handling clothes that have been in contact with ewes or lambs.
