Around town: Parenting skills group's £5000 boost

A CITY arts group has received a funding boost for a scheme which uses play to help develop parenting skills.

North Edinburgh Arts Centre's Create project involves around 50 families and children under five meeting weekly for creative play and healthy eating workshops, as well as good parenting sessions. The Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland awarded the project 5000. Centre director Kate Wimpress said: "We were absolutely delighted to receive this award."

Fayre way to raise funds

A GARDEN fayre is being held at a sheltered housing complex in Leith next Saturday. The annual event, hosted in Port of Leith Housing Association and starting at noon, will boast stalls, a raffle, home baking and a tombola. It aims to raise money for day trips, theatre trips and lunch clubs.

Petanque is hit for kids

A SUMMER petanque tournament at Edinburgh's Quartermile development raised 6400 for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation.

More than 300 people attended the event, compred by Mark Martin of Forth One and organised by developers Gladedale Capital.

Playhouse gets director's cut

The Playhouse will be among a handful of venues in the UK to showcase the digital restoration of Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven, hailed as "the most gorgeously photographed film ever made". The screening, on July 26, was approved by the celebrated director.

TV truckers head for Scots show

TWO stars of fly-on-the-wall documentary series Ice Road Truckers will be guests at Truckfest Scotland at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston. Alex Deborgorski and Lisa Kelly will be at the event which runs on August 6 and 7 from 9am to 5.30pm. Day tickets cost 12.50 for adults (14 on the day) and 6 for children (7 on the day). Family tickets (two adults and two children) are 32 in advance and 35 on the day.

Stylists get straight to the point for charity

hairdressers from three city salons have raised 400 for the charity It's Good 2 Give at a style event at Hawke and Hunter.

Toni & Guy, Medusa and Egg Hair & Body drew a crowd of around 200 guests to showcase the latest trends, with the support of the hair-straightener makers ghd.

Lynne McNicoll, from It's Good 2 Give, said: "We are a very small charity supporting young people with cancer and we can't thank ghd and everyone involved enough for supporting us."
