Service will help women suffering from abuse

WOMEN who don't feel safe in their own home because of domestic abuse are being offered advice by a new service.

The Home Not a Safe Place scheme in East Lothian is being billed as a "one stop shop" for women who experience abuse, and their children. Women who have previously suffered domestic abuse have helped shape the initiative, which is run with the help of the East Lothian Violence Against Women Forum.

Those attending will be advised on places to stay, financial help, staying safe and how to continue to support their children.

Cllr Ruth Currie, East Lothian Council's joint futures spokeswoman, said: "Too many women experience domestic abuse in our area and are left feeling afraid, alone and unsupported.

"This information has been developed to provides a resource that will empower women experiencing domestic abuse."

"By bringing together details of the wealth of services that are available, it will increase their awareness of their rights, help them to know how and where to seek assistance and give them clearer information on what support they can expect."
