Sedative use for dementia patients slated
EXPERTS have criticised the use of sedatives to treat people with dementia.
The criticism follows the publication of a three-year study in The Lancet Neurology which looked at patients living in care homes, including patients in Edinburgh.
The study found a doubling of the risk of early death in those on the drugs long-term.
Ministers have said they are reviewing the use of anti-psychotic drugs among dementia patients. They are currently prescribed to as many as 100,000 in UK care homes.
The study involved 165 patients with Alzheimer's disease in Edinburgh, Oxfordshire, Tyneside and London.
