Scottish Doctor Who star to join Radio 1

SCOTTISH Doctor Who star Karen Gillan is to become a Radio 1 DJ.

Along with co-star Matt Smith, the pair will be showing another dimension to their talents as they step in for a guest-presenting slot next month.

Smith, who plays the Doctor, and Gillan, who plays sidekick Amy Pond, will be manning the decks on Christmas Eve.

Radio 1 bosses have also lined up a series of appearances from chart and TV stars over the festive period.

Gavin and Stacey star James Corden will be doing an hour-long slot on Christmas Eve, as will rapper Tinie Tempah.

On Boxing Day, the station throws over nine hours of its schedule to its star guests, who will include Pixie Lott, Plan B, Nicole Scherzinger and N-Dubz. For a second year, listeners will have a chance to fill a 15-minute slot on Christmas Day during the "tinsel takeover".

The festive period will also see Fearne Cotton present a show from her home and breakfast show DJ Chris Moyles hosting a karaoke special.

Smith and Gillan will also feature in the BBC1 Christmas schedule with a festive Doctor Who special, A Christmas Carol.

Former model Gillan has become a nationwide favourite since taking the role of the Doctor's sidekick. She has sparked some comment due to her sexy image and short skirts.
