Youth gets 16 months for glass bottle attack

A TEENAGER has been detained for 16 months after smashing a glass bottle over a Bangladeshi man’s head.

Mark Reid, 17, was reported to police by his mother, who realised he was responsible after reading coverage of the assault in the Evening News.

Reid’s parents confronted the teenager and asked him whether he was behind the attack, which police had originally been treating as racially motivated. The teenager replied: “Yes. No. I don’t know.”

Sultan Miah, 50, was attacked in Dumbiedykes Road on September 18 and rushed to hospital, where he underwent exploratory surgery.

Reid, a prisoner at Polmont Young Offenders Institution, earlier pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Miah to his severe injury.
