Would-be bag thief taught a lesson after trying to snatch handbag in North Berwick

A WOMAN fought off a mugger who tried to snatch her handbag as she walked towards a train station.

The 22-year-old was walking on Clifford Road in North Berwick, East Lothian, at 8.15pm on Wednesday, when a man tried to snatch the bag from her shoulder.

She refused to give up her bag, and the suspect fled in the opposite direction down Clifford Road. He is described as white, around 20-years-old, 5ft 10in tall with an average build. He was wearing a black jacket, a dark baseball cap, a dark hood pulled over the cap, light blue jeans and white trainers.

A police spokesman said: “The young woman successfully fended off the would-be thief, who was forced to flee empty-handed. We are keen to hear from anyone who was in or around Clifford Road and remembers seeing anything suspicious.”
