Work to start on £44m Forres flood scheme – ten years after disaster
MORAY Council has secured the funding needed to press ahead with a long-awaited £44 million flood alleviation scheme for Forres.
Scores of homes in the town were among those that suffered in devastating floods that hit the region in November 2002, causing an estimated £100m in damage to houses and businesses in Forres, Elgin and Rothes.
Moray Council has already earmarked £9m from its capital budget for the scheme.
It has now been confirmed that the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities has agreed to allocate more than £35m to the Forres project from the Scottish Government’s flood scheme funding.
The Forres Pilmuir project is designed to protect nearly 1,000 homes and businesses in the west of the town from flooding from the River Findhorn. The scheme was approved by the Scottish Government last March after a public inquiry.
Work on the project is expected to begin in the autumn and take two years to complete.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 06:04 AMWell it has been ten years since the original flooding. Could be intelligent to introduce a gradual improvement in the river with the minimum of cost to alleviate the chance of another flooding. There must be dozens of folk looking after the river who would give you a few clues. I am getting too old for this. Your average councillor is elected not for his intellectual attributes but because he stands the best chance of remaining sane and totally compus mentis during his or her term in office. When you get a problem outside of traffic, building or sewerage, try and get guys to advise you who know what they are talking about. I do not care if it is a world first, it is common sense.
