Wheel opening delay
THE planned opening of the Falkirk Wheel canal boat lift next Wednesday has been postponed for at least a month because of repairs following a vandalism attack.
British Waterways said the attraction, which connects the Union Canal and Forth & Clyde Canal, would not open until June. However, the 17 million structure’s official opening by the Queen on 24 May, as part of her Jubilee tour of Scotland, is still expected to go ahead. Officials said parts of the hydraulic and electrical controls of the world’s only rotating boat lift would have to be repaired or replaced.
The damage was caused after a lock gate was wrenched open last week, sending millions of gallons of water cascading over the wheel. Repairs are expected to cost 100,000, but engineers are waiting for equipment to fully dry out.
Police said they were following "positive lines of inquiry".
