West Lothian council first to host Fairtrade day

A LOTHIANS council is to become the first local authority in Scotland to host a Fairtrade day.

The event, which promotes Fairtrade products that benefit disadvantaged producers from the developing world, will be held in West Lothian on
March 1.

Products that carry the Fairtrade mark include coffee, tea, cotton, flowers, beer and
footballs.

Special activities will be held at St John’s Hospital, West Lothian College and the council’s offices in Livingston.

Council leader John McGinty said he believed it was the first fairtrade day of its kind in the country.

He said: “One of the highlights of West Lothian Fairtrade Day will be a debate on fairtrade by two secondary schools. This will be the first schools debate to take place in the council chambers at West Lothian Civic Centre.”

Details are available at www.westlothian.gov.uk/fairtrade.
