Warning to drivers to cut their speed

A SENIOR police officer has warned drivers to cut their speed on the roads as forces across the country prepare for a major crackdown.

A day of action tomorrow will focus on “inappropriate drivers”, including those without licences or insurance, not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones at the wheel.

Superintendent Denise Mulvaney, who leads road policing for Lothian and Borders Police, said there was a clear and established link between speeding and crashes which cause death or serious injury.

She said: “There are many ways in which drivers can put themselves and other roads users at risk – speeding, failing to obey traffic signals and signs, and using a vehicle which is just not fit for the road.”

Drivers caught speeding face a minimum £60 fine and three penalty points added to their licence.

Superintendent Mulvaney said: “I would encourage all road users to respect the speed limits and drive appropriately for the road conditions. The speed limits are there for a reason – to keep you and others safe and all officers will be vigilant to ensure they are obeyed.”
