Visit MS centre and see how you can help

A LOTHIANS centre that helps more than 200 people living with Multiple Sclerosis is appealing for volunteers.

The Swanfield MS Therapy Centre, based on Bonnington Road in Leith, provides hyberbaric oxygen therapy, which is known to relieve the symptoms associated with the chronic condition. The centre also has an in-house physiotherapist and complementary therapists.

The centre's administrator, Alistair Purser, hopes this week's 25th National Volunteers' week will inspire people to give up more of their time to charity and raise awareness of the work the centre can do. The MS Therapy Centre is hosting an open event today from 10am to 5pm.

There are currently 25 volunteers who give between one and eight hours of their time a week to operate the oxygen chamber, help with fundraising, housekeeping and administration duties and offer a friendly ear to members.

Helen Marriott, 61, of Restalrig, has been a volunteer at the centre for 13 years. She said: "I have definitely gained more than I have given."
