Visit identifies items needing to be repaired

VANDALISED playparks and damaged street furniture have been identified for repair following a walking tour of a city estate by police and residents.

The inspection was carried out yesterday morning in the Calders area of Wester Hailes as part of the month-long campaign to improve the area.

Officers working under Operation Cipher were joined by officials from the city council’s services for communities department, Councillor Denis Dixon and a local resident to check in and around Calder Park.

Its purpose was to identify areas in disrepair, or which require police action due to antisocial behaviour problems.

Previous action under Operation Cipher has included drugs raids at various addresses in the area, resulting in more than £80,000 worth of heroin being recovered along with over £2000 of cannabis.

Community officers and partner agencies also took part in a five-a-side football tournament with local youths aimed at promoting positive life choices.

Chief Inspector Richard Thomas said: “Police enforcement activity was carried out to identify and remove those involved in criminal activity from the area.”
