Views sought on best site for £15m Highlands museum

A DEBATE on the site for a new iconic building to house a £15 million museum and art gallery was thrown open to the public yesterday.

A new facility "of international importance" is being planned in Inverness to house exhibits from national and regional collections. At 4,095 square metres, it will have nearly three times more space than the existing museum.

In July, Highland Council commissioned an evaluation of 14 possible locations. Three remain in contention - a car park next to the Town House, part of the Inverness College complex at Midmills and the Northern Meeting Park.

A public consultation is due to end on 11 January.

Professor Duncan Macmillan, chairman of the Highland Gallery and Museum Steering Group, said:

"The Highlands deserve a modern building which, like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, for instance, is so exciting that people want to come and see it."
