Victory for vendor in coffee war

A STREET trader who sparked a coffee war on Lauriston Place with a replica police box hut can continue trading – providing he removes his kiosk overnight.

Joiner John McConnell built the replica police box to resemble similar coffee huts throughout the city, but fell foul of the council's regulatory committee by leaving his box on Lauriston Place overnight.

His trader's licence came up for renewal yesterday and objections were received from a neighbouring police box owner and the Tollcross Community Council, which argued that the two boxes and a nearby Starbucks constituted an excessive amount of similar trading in the area.

Both objections were dismissed and Mr McConnell was yesterday granted a renewal of his trader's licence.
