Trams and cycles can get along

THE Capital’s controversial tram system, should not prove a hazard to cyclists if it is planned correctly, according to Sir Chris Hoy.

Concerns have been raised about the safety of cyclists along the tram route after a section of Princes Street was marked for trams, cycles and buses together.

The lanes were dubbed a “death trap” – but Sir Chris said despite the concerns the system could work.

Asked about the issue of the Edinburgh tramway and potential safety concerns for cyclists, Hoy said other European cities had demonstrated that the two can work in harmony if planned correctly.

“To be honest with you I haven’t had the chance to ride around the city recently in terms of commuting, but I know that when I have been in cities around Europe where there are trams and bikes it can work.

“Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Berlin – a lot of European cities – they have trams and cyclists and it works well, but you have to put a lot of thought into it and make sure it’s well planned. I’m sure the two can work together.”
