Top prize for 'magical' Witchery boss
THE owner of the Old Town restaurant, The Witchery By The Castle, has been named Restaurateur of the Year at the catering industry's equivalent of the Oscars.
James Thomson beat stiff competition to take the top prize at the Catey awards. Other nominees included the Michelin-starred Hibiscus in Mayfair and chefs the Galvin Brothers.
The judging panel said: "Thomson's goal of creating magical dining experiences within unique and atmospheric settings has proved a major tourist magnet for the Scottish capital."
Mr Thomson, who founded the restaurant in 1979 at just 20, also owns the Tower restaurant at the Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street, and the five-star Prestonfield Hotel and its restaurant Rhubarb.
Head of the Edinburgh Restaurateurs' Association, Malcolm Duck, said: "He has done very well over the years and he deserves everything he has got."
