Top dementia scientist in city

A LEADING dementia scientist from America is on her way to the Capital as part of a £400,000 exchange programme aimed at improving the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease.

Lindsay Reese, of the University of Vermont, will work with Dr Karen Horsburgh at Edinburgh University as part of a three-year project to investigate changes in the blood-brain barrier.

It is believed that the shield of tightly connected cells that regulates which proteins can pass in and out of the brain may be connected with Alzheimer’s disease progression.

The project has been jointly funded by Alzheimer’s Research UK and the American Alzheimer’s Association.

Dr Reese said: “I look forward to the intellectual exchange and advancement that can occur as a result.”
