IF she hears about this discovery, Morningside’s famous moggy Maisie may soon be on the prowl.

A trio of mice have stolen the spotlight from the star of the children’s books after they were found in a pet carrier outside a vets’ practice.

Named Tom, Dick and Harry, the domestic rodents were rescued by a receptionist at the West End Veterinary Partnership on Morningside Road when she arrived for work on Wednesday morning.

An appeal has now been made for information as to how the pets – who are being cared for at the Scottish SPCA’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming in Balerno – got there.

It remains to be seen whether the story of their adventure will be featured in a book of their own.

Centre assistant manager Kenny Sharpe said: “Tom, Dick and Harry are very cute wee guys with plenty of character. They don’t mind being handled so it seems they have been used to human interaction with their previous owner.

“Tom, Dick and Harry were cruelly dumped in the freezing cold but, despite their ordeal, they’re really friendly little mice. They will make fantastic pets for the right owners and we’d love to find them good homes soon.”

Vet Richard Rimer said finding mice on the doorstep “wasn’t something that happened every day”.

He said: “We don’t really know what happened.Obviously someone was hoping they would go to a good home. I’m sure they will be well looked after.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so could be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone interested in rehoming one the mice, or who has information on them, can call the Scottish SPCA on 03000 999 999.
