Thousands speak out over loch's plans for speed limit

MORE than 2,000 submissions have been received as part of a consultation exercise over planned new by-laws for Loch Lomond which include a controversial proposal to extend the 7mph speed limit.

Under the plans, the existing lower speed limit will be extended across half of the loch's surface, a move opposed by boat-owners and local businesses.

Proposals also include introducing safety measures such as compulsory buoyancy aids and raising the age for supervision of young people driving motorised craft to 16.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority says the aim is to improve safety and keep the existing variety of activity on the loch, while allowing for quiet enjoyment of the area. The public consultation ends on Friday, 28 October.

Bob Elliot, the park's senior operations manager, said: "We are extremely pleased with the level of responses so far.

"More than 2,000 responses have already come in."
