Teasing sparked singsong

A RANGERS fan grew so tired of being teased about his team’s poor performances that he started singing a sectarian anthem, a court has heard.

Ryan Girdwood, 18, was arrested on August 11 after he ran through a train which had stopped at Waverley Station singing the Billy Boys.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told that a Celtic fan had been insulting Girdwood about how bad Rangers were after they drew against Peterhead.

Girdwood, of Livingston, West Lothian, responded by chanting the offensive anthem. He yesterday pleaded guilty to breach of the peace and was fined £100.

Depute procurator fiscal Bruce Macrossan told the court that Girdwood was on his way home from watching the match on TV in a city pub. He said the first offender lost his temper.

Defence solicitor Euan Roy said his client was sorry for committing the offence.
