Susan Boyle to get honorary doctorate from university

SINGING sensation Susan Boyle is to be given an honorary doctorate at the university where she studied for a certificate in caring.

The former Britain’s Got Talent star is being honoured by Queen Margaret University for her contribution to the creative industries.

Brought up in Blackburn, West Lothian, where she still lives, Boyle achieved international fame with her television debut in 2009 when she sang I Dreamed A Dream – from the musical Les Miserables – on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. One YouTube clip of the performance has 21.5 million hits.

She has sung on TV in the UK, the US, Australia, Ireland and Japan, and performed for Pope Benedict XVI and the Queen. She sang live to half a billion people on the TV show China’s Got Talent. Sir Tom Farmer, QMU founding chancellor, will will present the honorary degree to Boyle. Other recipients include developmental psychologist Professor Colwyn Trevarthen, leading hotelier Norman Springford and Professor Ian Percy CBE, former chair of QMU’s board of governors.

The honours will be presented at a graduation ceremony on July 6.
