Susan Boyle to appear in salad cream advert

IT was just months ago that Susan Boyle realised a lifelong dream by sharing a microphone with her hero Donny Osmond.

Now it appears the experience has given the Blackburn superstar a taste for collaborations – after she agreed to sing with the Village People for American TV.

But while her decision to duet with her teen idol Donny may have been one of the heart, SuBo has a very different motive for recording with the 1970s gay icons – helping to sell salad cream.

The 51-year-old has signed up to take centre stage in an advertising campaign for Miracle Whip, an American “mayonnaise alternative”, which will also see her perform with Lance Bass, a member of 1990s boyband N’Sync, former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and 1980s pop star Tiffany.

She flew out to Los Angeles to record the spoof song, called Open Mouth, which is a plea to customers to try the alternative dressing, rather than unfairly “prejudge” it.

Susan said: “It was a bit of a giggle taking part. It was fun to sing alongside people like Lance Bass and the Village People.”

Kraft Foods, which owns Miracle Whip, said it wanted Susan involved because she was an artist who had been underestimated – just like its white salad dressing. The firm is hoping her popularity in America will provide a sales boost.

The campaign will run in America throughout this year and was launched during the Grammy Awards on Sunday night. It is the first time she has endorsed a brand in the US.

Susan added: “I left LA and once back I started trying to think of ideas for album number five.

“I’m not giving anything away just yet. It’s good to have a few surprises.”

Lucrative sideline

Although her Miracle Whip endorsement is her first in the US, in 2011, Susan featured in an advert for Japanese beer brand Yebisu.

Other divas to sideline in advertising include Beyonce, who recently signed a reported £32 million deal with Pepsi.
