Student nets prize for book club online
A STUDENT from Edinburgh has won an award for running an online book club with more than 5,000 members across the world.
Jen Campbell, 22, scooped the Penguin Orange Readers' Group Prize for setting up several online book forums while she was studying English Literature at the University of Edinburgh.
The sites have members ranging in age from 13 to 50 and from as far afield as Finland and Australia. Members can suggest books for discussion and post comments on them at any time.
Ms Campbell will receive a cheque for 1,000 and tickets to the Orange Prize for Fiction awards ceremony in London on 3 June.
She said: "I'm definitely going to use some of the prize money to run a competition where members can e-mail about why they love reading to win book tokens."
Author and chairwoman of the judging panel Kate Mosse said: "It's a great achievement to run such a well-supported and vibrant online book club and succeed in attracting international book lovers. There's no doubting her commitment to making reading as social and community-based as possible."
