Stray cows bring chaos to rush-hour M-way traffic
POLICE marksmen shot dead part of a herd of escaped cows that brought rush-hour chaos to one of Scotland's busiest motorways yesterday.
The entire M73 in Glasgow was closed overnight on Tuesday after cattle strayed on to the road from a transporter truck carrying 47 animals which overturned near junction 2 at around 6:05pm. Thirty of the animals were rounded up while several had to be humanely destroyed by vets, but a group of animals remained on the loose overnight and strayed back on to the road at around 4:20am yesterday.
One cow was killed by a locomotive engine after wandering on to the track at Baillieston. Another died after being hit by a lorry and the final two were shot by a police marksman.
The road finally reopened at around 8:30am.
The truck driver was uninjured.
