Steel talks at dad’s church

FORMER presiding officer Lord Steel has delivered a lecture at the church where his father was minister.

He spoke at St Michael’s Parish Church, in Linlithgow, West Lothian, about a variety of topics, including the future of Scotland, House of Lords reform, international development, immigration and fairness in society.

Lord Steel said: “The UK is now a more unequal society in terms of income and life chances generally than at any time since the 1920s.

“In all the contemporary debates about bankers’ bonuses and the like, we have ignored the deeper question of why anybody – bankers, footballers, television stars or whoever – actually needs indecently vast sums of money to do their jobs.”
