SNP abandons hopes for independence poll

THE SNP have given up on their pledge to hold an independence referendum next year.

Senior party members are thought to have abandoned hope any opposition party will back a poll on independence before the 2011 Scottish Parliament elections, it was reported today.

Instead they hope to secure Liberal Democrat support for a referendum in 2012. The Lib Dems are to discuss the issue at a conference in Dunfermline today.
