Smith is £20 man of note

SCOTTISH economist Adam Smith takes pride of place on a new version of the UK's most common banknote launched today.

The 18th century author of The Wealth of Nations, who is buried in Edinburgh's Canongate kirkyard, replaces English composer Sir Edward Elgar on the Bank of England's new 20 note.

Kircaldy-born Smith has influenced the thinking of Gordon Brown and Margaret Thatcher.
