Signs to predict journey times

NEW road signs will soon tell drivers how long it will take to drive between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The electronic signs are to be installed on the M8 by the end of the year, it is reported today.

They will be connected to traffic cameras capable of tracking vehicle number plates and adjust journey times to traffic conditions.

The signs will also indicate how long drivers will take to reach particular junctions.

Other roads which could be covered by the signs in future include the M9 between Edinburgh and Stirling and the M90 approaching the Forth Road Bridge.

Transport Scotland's director of trunk roads management, Jim Barton, said: "It's not the shortness of the journey that is important to people, but the reliability."
