Shell fund gets fired up by city firm’s biofuels project

A BUSINESS in the Capital with an innovative idea to tackle climate change has won a £40,000 Shell Springboard award.

Celtic Renewables, a spin-out company from Napier University, received the Shell Springboard award for its process to create next generation bio- fuels from by-products of the Scottish malt whisky industry, resulting in reduced oil consumption and CO2 emissions.

Shell Springboard is a Shell-funded UK social investment programme, which provides a financial boost to small and medium enterprises with low-carbon business ideas. Mark Simmers, chief executive officer at Celtic Renewables, said: “This is a fantastic endorsement of our business and will allow us to analyse the best opportunities to deploy our technology in Scotland.

“A major benefit to our technology is that it is able to respond directly to rural communities’ needs by providing sustainable biofuels and long-term employment.”

This year, the programme received 130 entries, and 24 businesses have been shortlisted to present at three regional events across the UK.

the above article does everything but tell us the core of the story. what does the team do to warrant the cash. Specifically what do they do to create the bio-fuels, what is the process?? the whisky companies are using their dray to generate electricity but the local farmers who use the dray as cheap feed are complaining. One gain, another pain.......
