Sculpture base is taking shape
A multi-million-pound international sculpture centre for the Capital has moved a step closer.
Under the plans, the purpose-built centre – the first of its kind in the UK – would be built on the site of an existing sculpture workshop in Newhaven.
Now city leaders have agreed to give the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop a new 125-year ground lease for the site at a nominal rent of 1 per year.
The 4.5 million facility, built in an old railway shed at Hawthornvale, will double the size of the existing centre, creating space for specialist workshops for artists, as well as an expanded IT suite. In addition, there will be around 30 artists' studios available and it is hoped that up to 3000 people will use the facilities each year.
