Science city plan ditched over reputation worries
COUNCIL leaders have axed plans to brand Edinburgh one of the UK's "science cities" amid fears such a move could damage the its international standing.
Six cities in England have received the recognition from the Government, which is designed to help universities and research companies secure additional funding, and last year, city leaders said Edinburgh should have a similar title.
However, in a new report, city development director Dave Anderson said the Capital had already become an "established leader" and should be compared with cities like Boston, Munich and Paris – not York, Manchester or Birmingham.
He said: "Analysis of the science city concept demonstrates that Edinburgh is already a science city, possessing a maturity which the nominated 'science cities' in England are aspiring to emulate."
"New branding might undermine the overall Inspiring Capital city region brand."
