Salmond leads summit talks on energy and finance crisis
FIRST Minister Alex Salmond has led a meeting of the British-Irish Council at Hopetoun House in South Queensferry.
The First Minister welcomed representatives from all eight British-Irish Council administrations – Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and the UK Government.
The main items for discussion were demography and energy.
The summit discussed energy and the need to ensure energy supplies, including the opportunities in renewable energy resources such as harvesting the offshore energy between the coasts of Scotland and Ireland via a sub-sea grid.
The council also took the opportunity to consider the current economic climate.
Ministers expressed concern about the impact of the global financial crisis on the real economy.
Also attending the meeting were Northern Ireland's First and Deputy First Ministers, Martin McGuiness and Peter Robinson.
