Ryder Cup 2014 hotel shortage leaves homeowners quids in

Homeowners are looking to cash in on the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles

Homeowners are looking to cash in on the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles

HOMEOWNERS are hoping to cash in on the influx of golf tourists flocking to Gleneagles during the next Ryder Cup.

• Ryder Cup estimated to bring £100 million to the Scottish economy

• Shortage of quality hotel rooms sees price for homes being quoted up to £1600 a day

• Bed and breakfast accomodation hits £100 a night

As Europe retained the famous title last night, scores of Perthshire residents hatched plans to cash in when the famous golfing event comes to Gleneagles in 2014.

It will be the first time the Ryder Cup has returned to Scotland - the spiritual home of the sport - in 40 years.

While the cost of renting a castle near the famous golf resort will only be divulged to “serious inquirers”, even more modest properties are commanding a hefty sum.

A six-bedroom home near Coupar Angus is being advertised for £1500 per day and a four-bedroom home 13 miles from the venue is looking for £5000 a week.

A three-bedroom house in the city of Perth is up for rent at £600 a night, while a two-bedroom cottage just one mile from Gleneagles will cost a golfer, fan or caddie £500 a day.

Even bed and breakfast accommodation is getting in on the act, with £100 per person being sought across Perthshire.

Richard Wallace of Ryder Cup property specialists GlenGolf2014.com said today: “The shortage of quality hotel rooms presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Scottish homeowners to open their doors to visitors from across the golfing world.

“The Ryder Cup is on a different scale to other golf events and its return to Scotland for the first time in 40 years will not be repeated anytime soon.”

While proximity to Gleneagles is seen as an advantage, properties close to legendary golf courses in Angus, Dundee, Fife, Stirlingshire and even the Scottish capital are also able to ask an impressive rental.
