Ron Hill's digging out his trusty string vest for the Edinburgh Marathon
COMMONWEALTH gold medal winner and former marathon world record holder, Ron Hill, will be among those pounding the streets of the capital on Sunday, bringing with him his 40-year-old string vest.
The 71-year-old wore the vest when he smashed the world record and won gold at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. He completed the race in a world record time of 2:09:28, becoming the first man ever to break the 2 hours 10 min barrier.
On Sunday he will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his victory by running the final leg of the race in a relay team, and despite being the man behind two sportswear companies, Ronhill and Hilly Clothing, he plans to wear his trusty string vest once again.
Mr Hill said: "I just felt it would be nice to be able to go back and run the end of the marathon and reenact what happened, but on a shorter route."
He said he still remembered the moment he crossed the finish line at Meadowbank in 1970. He said: "I was just delighted."
