Resolution to £16,000 toilet tussle proves a relief for all

WALKERS and locals can finally spend a penny after a £16,000 legal wrangle over public toilets was settled.

Residents had been frustrated that the newly built public convenience on Colinton Road had not been opened for three months, amid a dispute between developers and the city council.

Eco-Logical Developments built them on condition they could convert the old toilet block next door into a house or office. The firm then refused to hand over the new facilities, saying the city council had increased its demand for fees and legal costs.

But the two sides have now reached an deal, following a meeting arranged by local councillor Jason Rust. The developer has agreed to pay a reduced fee to the council.

Mr Rust said: "I am delighted the toilets will at last open. The council obviously have to ensure they get best value for taxpayers' money and safeguard the public purse, but there also needs to be a commerciality in approach."

Mr Rust said the existing toilets were dilapidated, and had needed to be replaced for some time.
