Residents tyred of beach blight

TYRES washed up along the waterfront at Granton have been collected by local residents, who are now asking the council to take them away.

Around 250 tyres appeared on the beach just before Christmas, some of them covered in barnacles, suggesting they had been in the water for some time, while others showed limited signs of exposure to the sea.

It is not clear how the tyres came to find their way into the water and on to the beach but flytipping is thought to be the most likely explanation.

There was also uncertainty over whose jobs it was to clear them up, with suggestions that the Crown Estate is responsible for the beach at that point rather than the city council.
