Rather prickly situation for hedgehogs

HOUSEHOLDERS are asked to be on the lookout for underweight hedgehogs who may be at risk during the autumn.

The "autumn juveniles" are not big enough to survive hibernation, according to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.

And the group is urging people in the Lothians to check their gardens for the creatures – the result of litters born late in the season – and to feed them.

A spokesman said: "If these autumn juveniles do not put on enough weight before the cold weather starts they will probably die. Putting out meat-based dog or cat food can be a lifesaver.

"If you see one out in the day foraging, do put out a dish of food. If it is walking as though it is drunk and wobbly, or is sunbathing, the chances are it is hypothermic and needs help quickly."

If found they should be brought indoors and placed in a high-sided cardboard box, on a well-wrapped hot water bottle. Keep a towel over the hedgehog to keep in heat.
