Railway Museum keeps Flying Scotsman in UK
THE Flying Scotsman, the world’s best-known locomotive, is to stay in Britain following fears it could be lost to the United States.
The National Railway Museum in York has won its battle to save the historic train after receiving a financial boost from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Sir Richard Branson and public donations.
A successful bid was put forward with the help of a 1.8 million grant from the NHMF. An initial 365,000 was raised through the NRM’s public appeal which Sir Richard matched. A further 60,000 public donation raised the total to 790,000, leaving enough funds to keep the locomotive running in the UK for years.
The debt-ridden firm which owns the Flying Scotsman said it had put it up for sale due to the lack of progress with plans for a heritage centre at Edinburgh’s Waverley station.
