Rail line to be operated by government

THE rail line linking Edinburgh with London will come under public ownership from next week, it has been announced.

National Express is handing back its East Coast Main Line business, which operates services from London's Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley, after running up huge losses this year.

The Department for Transport announced today that the line will transfer to a government-controlled company at one minute before midnight on 13 November.

Union bosses said ministers did not expect the franchise to be re-let to the private sector until 2011.

The date means the franchise will be run by the government for at least 18 months. The company will be called East Coast Main Line, according to the RMT union.
