Raider who left mobile phone at crime scene is jailed for six years

A RAIDER who left his mobile phone at the scene of his crime has been jailed for six years.

Scott Smith, 21, dropped the phone while robbing a man at knifepoint in his flat in the Portobello area of Edinburgh.

It was registered in his name but police were unable to trace him before he had taken part with others in a second raid, at a house in the Craigour area, a month later.

In the incident, a knife was held at the stomach of a pregnant woman.

The High Court in Edinburgh was told that Smith, formerly of Mountcastle, Edinburgh, had taken to drink and drugs to try to ease his depression.

The judge, Lord Uist, told him that it was no excuse that he had been under the influence of drink and drugs. He added: “These crimes amount to lawlessness of the highest order, involving attacks on people in their own homes.”
