RAF Edzell: Flying into the history books
RAF Edzell was established as a flying school for the RAF, shortly before the First World War and was an air base throughout the conflict.
It was a civilian airfield during the 1930s but returned to service as RAF Edzell in 1940 during the Second World War. After the war, the site was then used as a motor-racing circuit and one of the last races at the circuit was won by Formula One legend Jim Clark.
RAF Edzell then reopened in 1960 as a base from the US navy, forming part of their “high frequency direction finding network” which used sophisticated surveillance equipment to track the movements of Soviet submarines. The base closed in October 1997.
