Pupils are a class apart with Anglo-French tale

A PRIMARY school in the Lothians has won a European language award after its pupils wrote, illustrated and published an adventure story in English and French.

Pupils from Mid Calder Primary School in West Lothian worked with primary pupils in France on the story, James Walker and the Buried Treasure.

The pupils wrote alternate chapters of the book, produced illustrations and created a blog where parents could vote on their favourite part of the story.

Representatives from the school received a European Award for Languages along with 11 other winning projects at an award ceremony in Bristol.

The award, organised by the National Centre for Languages, was presented by languages advocate Baroness Coussins and broadcaster Henry Bonsu.

Its "novel idea" project also won the EuroTalk Primary Language Prize, awarded for the best project from the primary sector.

Wilma Gordon, a teacher at Mid Calder Primary, said: "As a school we are delighted to have received this award."
