Public asked to save Moray toilets from closure

COMMUNITIES across Moray are being given the chance to take over and run their public toilets.

A total of 13 public conveniences in Moray are set to close as part of the council’s drive to cut its annual spending by £30million.

A spokesman for Moray Council today announced: “Community groups in Moray are being notified of the closures, and offered the chance to take over the toilets themselves as part of the Community Asset Transfer process.

“A total of 13 toilets have been identified as suitable for closure at locations including Hopeman, Keith, Findhorn, Forres, Cullen, Craigellachie and Buckie. Should no local groups be interested in taking them on the buildings will be permanently closed on 31 March and placed on the open market.”

Councillor Allan Wright, the leader of Moray Council, said it had been a difficult decision. But he continued: “I’m afraid that public toilets have become a luxury we cannot afford, given the level of savings we have to make.

“However, in all of the locations identified there is currently more than one public toilet and post closure of the identified toilets, there will still be one facility provided by the council.’’

He added: “I would urge any local groups wishing to take on and maintain their local loo to get in touch with the council’s Community Asset Transfer staff.”
